Kids Activities in Austin Texas
Austin might be a self-proclaimed “weird little town” but it’s a great place for a day or overnight trip. Abounding in free and inexpensive activities, Austin is also a fantastic place to explore with kids.
From dinosaurs to Peter Pan and everything in-between, make some time and have big fun in the hill country of Austin, Texas. These recommendations are kid-friendly, educational, and absolutely delightful.
Zilker Park
This free, public park is an awesome place to kill a whole day or two and relax. Kids will love the train ride, the playground, digging for dinosaur bones, and even touring the sculpture museum. For the adventurous family, rent a canoe or kayak and cool off on the water. While there, be sure to check out the Nature and Science Center that boasts discovery labs with fossils, an interactive path teaching about Austin foliage, indoor caves for kids to crawl in and out, and rescue animals for petting.
Thinkery Children’s Museum
A new museum that’s just right for preschoolers and older kids, Thinkery offers activities that educate through experience. As a bonus, there are great water features available for play—just bring a change of clothes!
Austin Zoo
This rescue zoo outside Austin in the hill country offers close up viewings of the many animals they have rescued from captivity and abusive situations. Kids will love the tigers, monkeys, turtles, and wolves as well as many others. You can buy food and feed goats and other animals in the petting corral. There’s also a mini-train available for a chug around the grounds. Go early in the summer. The animals don’t like the heat and will be hiding and napping later in the day.
Dinosaur Park
Located outside Austin in Cedar Creek, Dinosaur Park’s inhabitants are life-sized replicas of dinosaurs. Kids will love sneaking around and running into these creations that are well maintained and perfectly posed for pictures. With lots of shade and picnic tables, pack a lunch and spend the day.
Peter Pan Mini-Golf
This 18-hole mini-golf course will delight the whole family. An Austin tradition since 1946, the course has recently received a face-lift, and everything’s looking bright and shiny. New features include a Texas totem pole and the giant shoe that’s now a bright blue Converse. Rates start at $5 for little ones and $7 for six and up.
