Back to school time is here. If you haven’t started getting your child ready for the upcoming school year, it’s time to start. There are three major categories parents have to deal with during the back to school prep time: immunizations, school supplies and clothes. Some of you are on the ball and probably have these taken care of already. If you haven’t and you’re starting to wonder how you’re going to get it all done, then you might appreciate a little guidance to getting these “Big 3” items knocked out as quickly and as efficiently as possible. So, let’s do that!

Immunizations

Every school district in Texas requires you to have your child properly immunized before they can attend public school. If you’re not sure whether or not your child has all the required immunizations, check out this helpful PDF from the Texas Department of State Health Services: Immunization Chart 2012-2013. You can also find this information online at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/. If you have any questions about the immunization schedule, contact the school your child will be attending.

School Supplies

Some parents might not know that Texas schools require students to come to school with a required set of school supplies. For out-of-state transplants like me, this is something we haven’t heard of before. Luckily the lists are pretty simple and local stores offer great deals on these items right before school starts. If you don’t know what items your child needs, take a look below. I’ve listed many of the major school districts in San Antonio and Austin with links to their required lists. If I haven’t listed your particular district, don’t freak out. Just Google your child’s school and they’ll most likely have the list on their website. If you can’t find it, call your child’s school and ask them where to go to view the list. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to provide the information for you.

Back to School Clothes

I’m not a fashionista, and my wife would laugh at the idea of me giving anyone fashion advice. So instead of me telling you what’s in style, I’ll let the “experts” do it. Below are oinks to three blogs that will give any clueless parents some insight into what’s hot and what’s not this fall. Good luck!
