Happy International Museum Day to all of you art, culture, history, and nature loving families. Today is a great day to explore the museums in your area or plan a weekend trip for your entire family. International Museum Day was created to raise awareness about the importance of museums. Today, we recognize how museums are instrumental in helping develop our society. Going to a museum with your family is a unique way for everyone to have a fun, spend time together, and also have an educational experience.
From America to Africa, Europe and Asia, almost 30,000 museums in over a 120 different countries have been a part of the festivities.
This international participation and high attendance numbers have confirmed that International Museum Day is a success!
Every year, the International Committee of Museums (ICOM) Advisory board organizes a theme for the special celebration, and this year’s theme is Museum (Memory + Creative) = Social Change. Because the theme is carried out around the world and in so many different countries, some museums host the celebration for not only a day, but a weekend, a week, or even a month.
The theme this year expresses the wealth of historical tradition that has been conserved and displayed by museums around the world. Blending the traditional with a touch of modern creativity is necessary for the stimulation and development of audiences everywhere. Museums have to constantly evolve to keep their audiences captive, and their ongoing evolution has ensured their lasting power and their ability to educate and transform our societies.
This year’s unique theme of Museum (Memory + Creative) = Social Change, is an optimistic one. The equation-style title dynamically combines several concepts that are necessary when defining what today’s museums represent, and which recognizes the universal character of museums and their beneficial influence on society.
So come celebrate this year’s theme, by recognizing the positive influences that your local museums have on your area. Museums enrich your community with new concepts and old traditions. Experience something new today when you visit a museum on International Museum Day.
