It’s no secret how hot Texas summers can get, which is why you do not want to skip over this blog post. While there are many ways to cool off in the summer, such as enjoying popsicles or just staying inside,  there’s nothing quite as fun as beating the summer heat with some old-fashioned water games.

Water Balloon Toss

The classic water balloon toss. Fill up some water balloons with water, then see how many times you can toss it back and forth without dropping it. If that’s too easy, take a small step back every time you catch it. Whoever stays dry (or, the driest) wins!

Sponge Toss

A water balloon toss isn’t guaranteed to soak you, so if the goal is to be sopping wet by the end, a sponge toss is the game for you. You can use sponges you already have, or buy a few really big sponges at the store for this. Soak them in water, and then toss a sponge back and forth, trying not to squeeze all the water out when you catch it. Once all the water is out, resoak the sponge and start again.

Water Limbo

Your kids will love this wet challenge! All you need is a hose for this fun activity. Turn the hose on, and point it so that it forms a limbo bridge. Have your kids take turns walking under the bridge, without getting wet. Once everyone has made it through, lower the bridge to make it harder to walk under. Continue lowering it until no one can make it under without getting wet.
Bonus: if you really don’t want to get wet, this is the perfect game to play with your kids! You’ll have full control of the hose, so you won’t have to worry about getting soaked.

Frozen T-Shirt Race

This freezing cold game requires a little planning ahead, but it will cool your kids down in no time! Get a t-shirt for every child, and soak it with water. Wring out the shirt so it is not dripping, fold it normally, and place it in a Ziploc bag. Put the bags of t-shirts into the freezer until they are frozen solid. Then, go outside and see who can get their shirt on first! You definitely won’t be sweating after this one.

Classic Games with a Sprinkler Twist

Any of the games below are even more fun to play with a sprinkler going off around you. Your kids might even entertain themselves for hours!

  • Red Light Green Light
  • Red Rover
  • Simon Says
  • Tag
  • Duck, Duck, Goose
  • Twister

There are so many water games to choose from. Which ones are you going to play this summer?
