Paper Bag Scarecrow
Transform an ordinary lunch bag and some simple supplies into an adorable paper bag scarecrow – perfect for make-believe play time.
You will need:
- Brown paper lunch bag
- White craft glue
- 2 googly eyes
- 2 feet of ribbon (fall colors)
- Black marker
- 1 paint stirrer
- 2 sheets of newspaper
- Orange foam flower
- Construction paper: yellow, pink, orange, white/tan brown
- Scissors
- Paper Bag Scarecrow hat pattern
Directions:
- Trace the hat pattern onto the tan or white construction paper, then cut out. Draw stitches on the rim and hat top with tic-tac-toe symbols.
- Lay out the paper bag on a stable surface with flap side facing down. Glue the googly eyes three inches from the top.
- Cut a triangle from the orange construction paper as a nose, then glue in place below the middle of the eyes.
- Cut out two circles for cheeks from the pink construction paper, then glue on either side of the nose. Next, draw a smile that goes from the bottom of one circle to the other. Put some stitches on the mouth.
- Draw eyebrows above the eyes with the marker.
- Fold yellow construction paper in half, cutting along the fold to produce two pieces. Cut one piece into thin strips, then glue some on the top to resemble hair. Cut shorter strips for bangs.
- Cut a strip of brown construction paper, then glue it onto the top of the hat as the band. Fringe-cut the top, then glue to the top so it partially conceals the brown brim.
- Glue on the yellow foam flower, then cut out a circle from brown construction paper and glue to the middle of the flower.
- Glue the hat to the top of the yellow hair.
- Fill the bag with crumpled-up newspaper.
- Place glue on the first few inches of the paint stir stick, then insert into the bottom of the bag.
- Crumple the bag around the stick to adhere.
- Tie a ribbon tightly at the end of the bag, two inches from the bottom. Make into a bow.
- Cut the leftover yellow strips in half and then glue them to the stick underneath the bag.
- Carry your scarecrow by the stick as a puppet for playtime.
We hope you enjoy trying these fun fall crafts with your child as the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp. These hands-on experiences provide comforting structure and a bonding opportunity, resulting in a fun, seasonal way to create memories together.
