Child's hands placing glue on the back of a four leaf clover made from green construction paper

St. Patrick’s Day is on Monday, March 17, and what better way to celebrate with the kids than by doing some fun crafts? Here are some to try with your little ones so they can proudly display the luck o’ the Irish!

Leprechaun Mask

Create a leprechaun mask with the kids so they can add creativity to their pretend play sessions. Here’s a cute craft to try.

You will need:

  • Paper plate
  • Construction paper: yellow, black, green
  • Orange paint
  • Gold glitter
  • Yarn
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Craft stick

Directions:

  1. Cut a circle in the middle of the plate.
  2. Help your child paint the plate orange; let dry completely.
  3. Cut out the hat pieces for younger children or let your older child do it on their own with supervision.
  4. On black construction paper, draw a small rectangle; from the green construction paper, draw a hat; from the yellow construction paper, draw a small square.
  5. Cut another square inside that one for the gold buckle.
  6. Add gold glitter to the buckle for extra sparkle.
  7. Glue each piece on the hat, then glue the hat to the mask.
  8. Cut small strips at the bottom of the paper plate for a beard.
  9. Let dry.
  10. Tie yarn on each side of the mask and put it around your child’s head, or add a large craft stick at the bottom so they can simply hold it up to their faces.

Cereal Rainbow Craft

This is an ideal fine-motor craft for young kids, as well as a color sorting activity. It’s also great for reinforcing early math concepts.

You will need:

  • Froot Loops cereal
  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Crayons or markers
  • Cotton balls

Directions:

  1. Draw the outline of a rainbow on a piece of paper.
  2. Tell your child to cover the lines in glue.
  3. Give your child a large bowl of cereal pieces and encourage them to separate them by color.
  4. Add them in the order of the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. To get really crazy, you can have them add random colors to each line.
  5. Add glue at the end of the rainbow and have them place cotton balls for a cloud.
  6. Let dry completely and hang.

Leprechaun Handprint Craft

Not only is this a fun craft to do with the kids, it’s a great way to preserve their little handprints as they grow.

You will need:

  • Orange, green, skin-colored paint
  • Googly eyes
  • Black marker
  • White, black and yellow paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Directions:

  1. Paint your child’s fingers orange and the palm a skin-colored paint of your choosing.
  2. Press it down firmly on the white paper.
  3. Using a paintbrush, draw a Leprechaun hat with the green paint.
  4. Dab some orange paint underneath the hat as well as around the top of the head.
  5. Add googly eyes, a dot for a nose, and a mouth with the black marker.
  6. Cut a thin strip of black construction paper, then press it onto the green hat.
  7. With the yellow paper, cut out a square, then fold it and cut another square out of the inside. Glue to the hat and you’re done.
